I was a stay at home dad and had no clue how to wash change or feed a baby. I suppose it was a blessing in disguise that I lost my job and opted for the house husband role.
After nurturing my little wonders I become an experienced dad at cooking cleaning and feeding my offspring. I had to learn how to hold a feeding bottle, warm the bottle and make the baby formula while my wife went to work.
I remember my wife giving me a tongue lashing because the feeding bottle was too hot. She shook that forefinger at me and shouted, ‘Are you nuts? .. ” How would you like that shoved in your mouth”? I was very careful after that and made sure the bottle was at the correct temperature.
If the bottle was too hot I would put the feeding bottle in a jug of cold water. I would shake the milk on my hand to make it was not too hot or too cold. I have written a blog post on how to bottle-feed your precious baby.
Baby bottle warmers
A bottle warmer can be an easy way to heat your baby’s milk at the correct temperature. With some warmers, you can warm baby food as well as feeding bottles. You don’t need to warm up milk if you make fresh formula. A baby formula that has been prepared must be used or refrigerated within one hour.
If the formula is at room temperature for more than one hour, don’t feed your baby with that formula dump it. A formula can be made for up to 24 hours but must be stored in the fridge to prevent bacteria.
Is a baby bottle warmer necessary?
I repeat. If you are making a baby formula to feed the baby within the next fifteen minutes you don’t need a bottle. NHS advises fresh formula to be made each time you feed the baby. Baby formula is not sterile and it is recommended that you make the feed when your baby needs it.
According to the NHS expressed milk can be stored up to five days at 4°C . Warm up the milk before feeding your baby. Instead of using a bottle warmer to warm up the bottle you put the bottle on a jug of hot water as I did in the eighties. It’s entirely up to you.
Different types of baby bottle and food warmers
Standard baby bottle warmers are common types of warmers that will heat up one bottle or a jar of food. No frills – place the bottle in the warmer filled with water and switch it on. Actually, it’s like boiling eggs. There is an indicator light which switches off when the milk reaches the correct temperature.
The thermostat keeps the water temperature at a constant heat. If I were to buy one I would choose one with a timer so I would know how long to keep the bottle warm.
