The Dangers of Baby Gear

Are we really doing our homework and thorough research when it comes to buying baby gear? A survey reveals a sharp increase in accidents at a rate of 8 per minute. Children under three have accidents with strollers carriers cribs and walkers. I am a health and safety freak when it comes to children and toddlers. See my blog post on How Safe is your Child at Home?

kitten

This amounts to 66,000 injuries per year ad that is only the infants and toddlers who end up in the emergency room. A Paediatric report claims that  Injuries are increasing and that four in five toddlers have fallen.

Dr Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, is surprised to find that many children are encountering serious injuries related to nursery products ending in a visit to the hospital

Smith states that head injuries seem to be the main issue which has seen a steady stream of visits to the emergency dept.

Baby Carriers

Baby Carrier

Baby carriers were responsible for almost 20 percent of accidents. These happened when parents did not follow the proper procedure of the use of buckles and safety straps. Parents were careless or negligent by placing a baby on a table or high surface instead of the floor.

 Cribs and mattresses

Baby Crib

Cribs and mattresses were second on the list it accounted for 19 percent of injuries. In 2011 drop-side cribs were banned as a result of the high rate of injury linked to moving parts of the crib.

Doctors warned parents to avoid soft crib bumpers. Pillows blankets soft bedding stuffed animals could cause suffocation and other injuries as can ill-fitting or soft mattresses.

Push Chairs and Strollers

Baby StrollerA survey found that 17 percent of injuries were caused by strollers.

Parents need to be more aware of safety issues surrounding the stroller by using buckling up and using straps to keep their infant safe and secure.

To reduce the odds of strollers falling over,   store bags underneath the pram instead of tying them to the handles or hanging the bags on the back the pram. Wider wheelbases are safer. Parents should use wheel locks to keep strollers in place when the pram is stationary.

I admit I was one of those Dads who flew down the hill with three kids, one sitting in the stroller one standing on the pram bar and another strapped to my chest in a baby carrier and shopping tied to both handles. What was I thinking? Read my blog

Toys

Exasaucer  Toys,  for example, walkers, jumpers exercises made up 16 percent of accidents in the report. There was a decline in accidents during the earlier years of research because walkers were safer to use according to Smith.

The ExerSaucer a stationary activity centre has come on the market – it does the same thing a baby walker except it has no wheels and is a  safer alternative.

Conclusion

The study, however, was found to be limited in that it only observed emergency visits to the hospital underestimating the total number of injuries. There was insufficient data to corroborate the cause of the injuries.

Dr Elizabeth Powell a paediatrics researcher at Northwestern University in Chicago affirms that when used properly, carriers don’t pose a problem unless there is negligence by parents who don’t  follow safety procedure.

Dr. Tanya Altmann, founder of Calabasas Pediatrics in California and a researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles had this to say

‘I see more and more parents at the park or out and about with their babies, not interacting with their babies but with their face in their phone,’ Altmann, who wasn’t involved in the study,a reaching or grabbing baby trying to get their parents’ attention is often when falls and accidents occur.’

Death and Dying

israel

We discuss every topic in our lives with our partners, friends or family members, but speaking about dying is still taboo. Birth and Death go hand in hand. It’s a subject we will avoid it all cost.

I think we believe that dying only happens to others and not to us. In a weird sort of way, we watch death every day.  We watch the news,  we catch a late movie or read murder thrillers.

We are taking our health seriously exercising more attending stress classes eating healthier.Let’s face it we will die at some stage and no one escapes it and that includes you.We are born and sadly we die. My question is why are we so afraid to face it.

Is Death a  Morbid Subject?

cemeteryAs I am getting older and close family members are dying I am questioning my own mortality. While most retirees are looking at holiday brochures, I am looking at undertakers, burials versus cremations.

It’s become very expensive and we have put a funeral plan in place so as to alleviate the stress of my children having to handle the funeral arrangements.

We have a wedding planner so why not have a funeral planner it’s something to think about in the near future.

My grandmother and my mother had a savings plan for their burial and we thought it was a normal part of life.

When my grandmother passed away she had her funeral plan covered and there was no financial stress on other family members

‘Death was a hot topic’

According to  Satish Modi, a businessman, philanthropist and author, stated that in the Victorian era in London, death was openly debated.

“In the late 19th century, the standard of life used to be much lower and people died much earlier. The time people had on this planet was very limited – the average life expectancy was around 48 [by 1901]. Nowadays people can expect to live into the high 90s. In the Victorian era, people understood that they had little time left to live a life, and they confronted and talked about it

Gradually, world events since the end of the Victorian reign have made death even harder to talk about, he explains.

“We’ve had two world wars between then and the present day; so many people have died. People were and still are very affected by these wars. People don’t want to talk about death.”

He adds: “Death is a very difficult area that we don’t want happening to us. It’s tough to come to terms with it. But we have to plan our death in the world in the same way we’d plan a holiday, for example.”

Modi’s new book In Love with Death encourages people to have open discussions with mortality, dying and raising awareness and possibility  that death can offer,

Assisted Dying Euthanasia

dying

There is a moral debate about assisted dying ( euthanasia) some countries have legalised assisted dying.Read more

Richard and Judy TV personalities revealed they would have a suicide pact and assist the other to pass over or would let dying take its natural course.

According to Dr John Troyer of the University of Bath, writing for The Conversation, says: “Our increasing longevity has given much more humans than ever before the opportunity to begin thinking about not only how a person wants to die but what kind of death it should be.

And the tension between society and the individual is best shown by the current debate about assisted dying: the rights of the person to decide how and when to die and the counter argument that this will essentially undermine the moral fabric of society.

The real reasons why death is still so hard to talk about with your loved one’s read more…
